Part-time dumbness

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 10:23 PM
I'm having trouble figuring everything out just with the website. What exactly are the differences between full-time status and part-time status at UW?

IMA pass? Bus pass? Do I have to start paying off my loans from last year earlier? Anything I'm not thinking of?

Blanket Donations?

  • Dec. 26th, 2009 at 5:51 PM
I am one of the (un)fortunates that received a Snuggie for Christmas. Well, my husband got one, too... so I guess he's (un)fortunate as well. It is not something that we will ever wear or use. Rather than it go to waste, I'd like to give them to someone who could use a warm blanket. We also received two smaller throw blankets that need to find a home.

I Googled, but didn't come up with something current. Do you know of any charities/shelters that need blankets?

Merry Xmas indeed!!

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 10:22 AM
I just want to THANK EVERYONE HERE FROM THE ASTONISHED DEPTHS OF MY HEART for your response to my post from two days ago.

577 comments were left before noon on Xmas eve day.
15 people donated money.
A grand total of $1210.80 raised for homeless street kids.
Nearly half of that coming from [info]scearley and his dollar-per-comment pledge.

I have never seen anything like this on lj. I have never seen such excitement and Joy
igniting like wild-fire throughout this community. I have never seen so many
uplifting comments and intentions. I stared at my screen with jaw agape and tears
rolling down my cheeks.

I want to personally thank: Sean Cearley, Cathy Compton, Noel Zapata, Jennifer
Keenan, Ann Lamoy, Marcos Duran, Justin Wieging, Marissa Wells, Nina
Forsyth, Shannon Riebman, Chelsea Feig, Matthew Coill, Kristin Carideo, John
Dempsey, and Kathleen Tuite.

Because of your monetary donations, many street kids will have the things they need
to survive this winter in Seattle.

I also want to thank everyone who said they had coats, sweaters, hand-knitted
scarves, etc. that they'd like to donate. Please contact me at: iamkatia@gmail.com to
set up pick up or drop-off times.

Some people gave a lot. Some people gave a little (which was probably a lot for
them). Every time someone gives something from the heart to others, it is a
significant event.

There's a story about when the Buddha went to visit a village to spread his
teachings. Kings and wealthy patrons came and lavished him with gold and the finest
silks. An old tattered woman with nothing to her name came and plucked a blade of
grass and humbly, reverently offered it to the Buddha. It was just as precious to
him as all the mounds of gold that lay at his feet. Any and all giving from the
heart is an amazingly precious thing.

WISHING YOU ALL THE HAPPIEST OF HOLIDAYS AND A PROFOUNDLY FULFILLING 2010.
The way to fulfillment is kindness and generosity.
You are well on your way..

Love you all,

Katia

Free Semi Used Spiral Note Books

  • Dec. 25th, 2009 at 4:09 AM
When I went to the UW I'd buy a shiny new spiral for each class at the beginning of the quarter and dutifully kept all my notes. I don't know why, I wasn't an exceptional note taker or anything. Recently going through them I realized how empty of markings some of the note books are. I decided to tear out the papers I wrote on and see if any poor college student could use 11 free spiral note books. They have 50-99% of their blank paper left. They all must go as one family, I don't want them being separated. They've spent a long time in a box together and have become really attached.

Picture: Read more... )

They all have the class # on the front and my contact info inside the front cover. Not the most attractive but this paper should get used at least once before it gets recycled.

You pick up in Northgate.

"Xmas Time for Jews"

  • Dec. 24th, 2009 at 2:04 PM
For all you Seattle Jews out there who are overdosing on Christmas music and Christmas decorations and all the rest, I present a new single from a local Jewish artist, Mai Li Pittard...

"Xmas Time for Jews"

Chestnuts. Peeled ones.

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 11:15 PM
I have called or gone into all the big grocery stores close to me (Fred Meyer, QFC, Safeway, Albertson's), and none of them have peeled/shelled chestnuts, either frozen OR jarred. Have any of you seen them anywhere recently? Am I just SOL because I didn't get a head start on shopping for Christmas dinner? I really don't want to have to shell 2lbs of chestnuts tomorrow.

If anyone can help, I would appreciate it. I will probably be calling or visiting Whole Foods, PCC, and Trader Joe's tomorrow, but if anyone can save me some time it would be a Christmas Miracle :D!!!!!!!!1!!

Thanks~

Wonderful people of Seattle, I thank you. I have successfully completed my quest for chestnuts. Happy Holidays, everyone!

Need help @ Xmas?

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 9:17 PM
I am looking for a volunteer opportunity on Christmas- as close to Ballard as possible since I will not have transportation.
I do volunteer work in the community- but not with anything that will have a project on that day.
My kids are in PDX,( one is working and can't get off) my husband is going to see them on the 25th, and I am staying home with our dog who is too old to board, since we decided it isn't a good idea for her to travel ( 15 & 1/2 yr old labrador).

Sadly, my mother died suddenly a week ago, and I don't think it is good to just sit home, so I was thinking of perhaps helping with a dinner?
Any ideas?

Snark welcome as well.

Do any of you remember the Battletech pods they had at the Wizards of the Coast game center?

Wish you could get a chance to play again? You're in luck. A friend of mine acquired eight of them and has opened an arcade in Kirkland.

Xmas for homeless street youth in Seattle

  • Dec. 23rd, 2009 at 11:07 AM
I am very close to many of the homeless street youth in Seattle.
For the last two years I have held a Christmas dinner for them on Christmas day
and asked the community here to contribute which you have done.
YOU made it happen and I'm grateful beyond words.

This year I won't be doing an Xmas feast since there are already two happening on Xmas this year.
But the kids still have many needs such as coats, waterproof footwear, gloves, hats, sleeping bags, hand-warmers, warm clothes, food gift-cards, etc, etc.
If you have any of these items, would like to purchase any of these items, or would
like to make a paypal donation to enable me to purchase these items, please let me know.

For those who would like to donate via paypal my email address there is: katia__r@hotmail.com
(That's two underscores after katia).

Here's a photo from last year's feast. The kids were really blown away by all of your kindness )

Thank you for listening and caring.
HAPPY HOLIDAYS TO YOU ALL!!

Katia

...

UPDATE: [info]scearley has posted a challenge to the lj community in comments.
He will donate $1.00 for every comment left until noon tomorrow.
So, if you can't afford to donate yourself, at least LEAVE A COMMENT thanking him.
The outpour of love makes me feel so blessed to be part of this.
Profoundly grateful..

UPDATE II: [info]dakotaluna will match [info]scearley's offer up to $100.00 !!

You guys are insanely awesome!!

.
From The New York Times: "“Snowpocalypse” appears to have made its way into the vernacular; ABC News even used the term in a Web headline on Saturday. However, the word might be more familiar to those in the Pacific Northwest. Urban Dictionary suggests the term emerged in Seattle in late 2008 to describe a Dec. 20 blizzard. But the term seems a bit older than that. While we make no claims achieving Safire standards here, our adventure in Google etymology yielded uses of the term in 2007 and even 2006 – both those years apparently referring to northern Washington State storms as well."

Replacement bike carriers on Metro buses?

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 1:33 PM
Are they replacing the two bike carriers on all metro buses with three bike carriers? I'm seeing more and more of these. Personally, I don't like them. They are hard to work with and hard to remove a bike from these new carriers.

Fuzzy Plant Finder?

  • Dec. 21st, 2009 at 11:45 PM
My fiance has always wanted the plant Stachys byzantina aka Lamb's Ear for whatever reason but I have always disregarded it. Tomorrow we're exchanging gifts and I'd like this to be one of them. Because all the stores are closed right now, and I don't feel like running around early tomorrow morning blindly looking for a small fuzzy plant, has anyone seen this plant in any store recently? Preferably in the Lake City or U-District Area?? Thanks so much!
